The President Of The Country Essay - 1300 Words

Marisela, a former resident of the capital of Venezuela, Caracas, came to the USA in the early 2000s, shortly after Hugo Chà ¡vez became the president of the country. Once a hospital nurse, Marisela got fired from her job because she refused to participate in a pro-governmental demonstration that the hospital employees were forced to attend. After a short time, her husband, who was a doctor at the same hospital, also became unemployed. Despite desperate searches, they could not find jobs, and the situation in the country was getting worse. There was no food at the stores, crime rates were climbing, the fear was spreading, and people were losing faith in a better future. One day, after being robbed in front of their apartment, Marisela and her first husband accepted the fact that they would not be able to live in those conditions, and decided it was time to leave Venezuela. Two months later, after saying a painful goodbye to their families, with only a couple of oversized trave l bags, and the savings of their lives in their pockets, Marisela and Amado flew to Miami to stay with her brother, who had been already living in Florida. Their hope was to pursue â€Å"the American dream of life, liberty, and happiness†.
